New in 2018! "Solo" is the followup to "A Good Set," my 2015 CD. I got to thinking about how a typical solo show is two sets, so I recorded another album. I made 10 new tracks (the second "set"), added them to the tracks from "A Good Set" (the first "set"), and thus one CD with all of the tracks. Old Friends is my second solo CD: there are a lot of songs that I've played and listened to over the years (hence the title; some of these pieces were recorded on earlier albums), and this recording features some of them (Donovan's "Colors"; Hendrix' "Little Wing", among others) as well as a number of newer original mandolincompositions that were inspired by my favorite picking partner, Peter Ostroushko. I worked very hard on this album, and I'm really pleased with the results. 1 0 000015.0 15 .00015E7 15

"repast" by Danny Gotham
Invalid Image LinkSold
Invalid Image Link
repast is a double CD. I spent about two years on it; it is a special project to commemorate turning sixty and being (more or less) in one piece. I have a huge supporting cast, and the music reflects my eclectic tastes: An original mandolin waltz, a Puerto Rican cuatro piece, Count Basie's "Down for Double", a solo ukulele rendition of "Something", you name it. The one real departure for me on this album are the tracks featuring some good friends doing lead vocals. Thirty-two tracks; about an hour and forty three minutes of music. If "Guitarheel" was my magnum opus, this is a double. A very filling "meal"....Guaranteed. 1 0 000025.0 25 .00025E7 25

Finding Hope

A guide for families affected by mental illness by Donna Kay Smith in collaboration with Susan Willey Spalt.
From the back cover: This book is derived from the real and lived experience of people who deal with mental illnesses of all types and severity on a daily basis. People who have learned to navigate a system that does not easily or readily provide the treatment and care needed - and which all too often harms those it is to help. It is based on what we know is important and is needed. Most importantly Finding Hope shares what we know - there is hope - no matter how hard or painful this experience, no matter how long it takes to be realized. There is hope here.

Back When We Were Italian

From the back cover: "This is the story of the author's coming of age in Italy between the years 1957 and 1961. Her family lived an ordinary life in New Jersey until August 23, 1957, when they boarded the USS Constitution and sailed for Italy. Their livew would never be the same. They lived in Livorno, Italy, for three years and Genoa for one. The author spent two of those years in boarding school in Rome. This memoir describes Italy just twelve years after World War II - an Italy that no longer really exist. An Italy that was home for four years and still claims part of the author's heart."

Cooking with Wine! - A Smith Cooking School Dinner
Invalid Image LinkSold
Invalid Image Link
We invite you to join Kathy, Paige and Jason and fellow foodies for the annual Smith Cooking School Dinner. This year we will cook all our dishes with wine—seared scallops with Prosecco butter sauce, chardonnay and pecorino risotto, and haricots verts with white wine and shallots. We will, of course, have specially selected wines to drink as well as wine-inspired appetizers and dessert! If you’ve been to our cooking school before, this one is simpler, and all the dishes are ones you can readily cook at home. We’re limiting this to 7 so we can all sit around the table and enjoy our community created dinner party!
Editor's note: The photo shows the fun being had at a pervious year's dinner.

Do you like to cook? Here are some great books for your collection! "Gourmet Cooking for Two" by Christi Silbaugh was bought so that we could up the level of our already tasty dinners. "I'm Dreaming of a Chocolate Christmas" by Marcel Desaulniers has fabulous photographs of very tempting desserts. Unfortunately, sugar is another food that must be limited, :-(. The final book, "German Cooking Today" by Dr.Oetker Verlag, states that the recipes are easy to prepare - even for beginners. We are apparently not into German cooking - perhaps you are. Wrap yourself or a loved one in warmth and love with this lovely shawl done in rust, aqua, beige, and gold (19" x 64"). Mosaic refers to the crocheting technique that was used to create the rust and gold blocks. Many hands contributed to this project. The minimum bid reflects the cost of the yarn. This one-of-a-kind shawl is actually priceless, :-). It was made from acrylic yarn so it can be put in the washer and dryer. 1 0 000050.0 50 .00015E7 15

Pretty pale pink, daisy-like flowers with a yellow center provide striking late-season color in the border garden. Use cut daisies for fall bouquets. This hardy and resilient perennial prefers full sun. Deer don't eat them! Will be available in the spring, no later than May 15. (The start for these flowers came from the UU auction in Blacksburg, VA, where they have become a favorite and can be found in many UU yards.) 1 0 000012.0 12 .00005E7 5

Cheeseburgers in Paradise

We've lived in Florida and been to Key West but paradise for us is cheeseburgers on the deck with friends right here in North Carolina. Come enjoy both of them (the cheese is optional) as the weather (hopefully) begins to turn from summer to fall. We'll have appetizers, lean ground beef (or turkey) burgers and trimmings, waldorf salad, some vegie concoction, and delicious desserts - always some chocolate. Beer, wine, and sparkling water will be available. 8 0 000040.0 40 .00025E7 25 9/26/20 5:00 PM
