Guided Twilight Swamp Hike in the Mating Season for Fireflies and Chorus Frogs
Invalid Image LinkInvalid Image Link
It's Big Sexy Time in the swamp for Lightning Bugs and Gray Tree Frogs. You can see a few fireflies here and there on any summer night but the vast majority of firefly flashes for the year are concentrated for about a week's time in early to mid June. It's firefly mating season and there is an EXPLOSION of firefly light that can at times be simply astonishing. The musical accompaniment is provided by many hundreds of male Gray Tree Frogs on the make. The firefly show starts at around 9:30 but peaks between 10:00 and 10:30. We will meet in the parking lot at the Wilma Schiermeier, Olentangy River Wetland Research Park at 352 W. Dodridge Street, Columbus, OH 43202 and walk the under 1 mile loop with some longer options. There are many thousands of starlings roosting nearby and it's also not uncommon to see raccoons and bats and sometimes owls. Flashlights are discouraged but red lights are fine. We can provide red lights for about 10 people and a couple of kinds of bug spray. 50 18 000015.0 15 .00015E7 15 6/15/18 9:30 PM

Newark Octagon Earthworks Open House and Walking Tour
Invalid Image LinkSold
Invalid Image Link
The Octagon Mounds are on the grounds of the Moundbuilders Country Club in Newark, and are only completely open to the public five days this year. The earthworks were built by the Hopewell culture more than 1500 years ago. The Octagon Mounds feature eight alignments with the rising and setting of the moon.

We will leave the church about 1:00 pm and drive (carpooling as we can) about 45 minutes to the mounds. Docents will be leading guided tours; they involve a mile or so of walking in mostly level grass. There is also an excellent museum and visitor's center at the Newark Earthworks about three miles away. We can stop at the River Road Coffee Shop (Dutch Treat) in Granville on the way home.

Rum Cruise 2018
Invalid Image LinkSold
Invalid Image Link
Back for the third time by request! Join us on our patio as we sample rums from various countries. With small servings, we'll sample about eight rums and perhaps rum versions of a few classic cocktails and a tiki drink or two. Includes substantial appetizers and dessert.

Ben, your skipper for this cruise, has explored the world of rum both independently and by attending large scale rum tastings, plus an actual rum tour with visits to seven distilleries in the Caribbean (photo is from that tour). After this evening, you'll have a new appreciation for different styles of rum.

Recommended advance reading: "And a Bottle of Rum: A History of the New World in Ten Cocktails" by Wayne Curtis. If more history books had been written like this, I'd have majored in history.

Game Night with "Wise and Otherwise"
Invalid Image LinkInvalid Image Link
Have fun with a shared favorite game of Kittie Palm-Houser and Nancy Rafert! In "Wise and Otherwise" the object is to identify correctly a proverb from around the world or to make up a substitute that appears to be genuine. Enjoy a guessing match that can yield points for skill or simply cause the players to dissolve into laughter, mostly the latter. At the Raferts' house in Clintonville. Beer, wine, non-alcoholic drinks and refreshments provided. It's really funny! 8 3 000020.0 20 .0002E7 20 2/24/18 7:00 PM

Learn about the Unique Comic Book Business with Author Dan Gearino
Invalid Image LinkInvalid Image Link
Meet to learn from local author and journalist Dan Gearino as he discusses a favorite and intriguing "out of the box" business. "Gearino captures the genie in the bottle. He's gathered together the players and the circumstances to reveal how a generation of entrepreneurs saved an industry and changed the very way people discover, buy, read, collect, and even think about comic books." Dan is a life long lover and student of comics as popular literature.

Snacks and beverage provided, as well as a signed copy of the book. You may take the book early, if requested.

Meet at the Raferts' house in Clintonville for this treat!

Joined by skeletons and flowers we will partake of good food recreated from restaurants I've visited. As we sip margaritas (inspired by a Chicago restaurant), I'll tell you about the restaurants that inspired the food. To begin, you can try Elote -- a warm corn appetizer (Sedona) and salsa with chips (Toledo). We will proceed to Green Chili Pork -- spicy but not on fire (Old Town San Diego). A variety of toppings for the pork lets you customize your meal.

This is the third and last day of the Festival de las Calaveras (bones) which happens on Oct. 31, Nov.1 and 2. This ancient Aztec celebration has become part of the Catholic tradition in Mexico. Now we can choose to celebrate it, too!
