An Evening with Isabel (Briggs-Myers) Earlier I was mentored by Isabel Briggs-Myers when learning about psychological type. Isabel and her mother Katherine developed the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) after WWI to address the acute need to resolve conflict and differences as psychological issues, not military issues. After WWII they accelerated their work. The MBTI reveals type differences based on preferences that are inherently neutral aspects of personality but can be viewed as threats by others. The theory behind this work is very deep. Carl Jung developed these concepts by recognizing that he was able to communicate effectively with patients when he adjusted his "channel" to theirs. I am proposing a dinner for six at my cabin in the mountains of Blount County. The six will take the MBTI and receive profiles in advance. The discussion will be in the vein of a cafe dialogue about how type and preferences interact in work, family, marriage and politics. Participants must be willing to reveal their type to other participants and engage in open give and take. Other than that, there are no rules. P.S. There will be stories about Isabel and her marriage to Peter Myers. Date will be February 23, 2013 at 6 pm, snow date March 9. No children, please.

Dr. Douglas Cox has a Ph.D. in psychology. He has given thousands of MBTIs and taught seminars worldwide. Thanks to Doug Cox. Minimum bid $25

"Crashing the Commission, Confessions of a University Twit" by Mark Harmon The signed book and a "University Twit" t-shirt package. The cover review written by Brian Griffin states, "Mark Harmon, a progressive Unitarian Universalist and university professor who 'ain't from around here', has accomplished a string of rare stunts during his time in this conservative city. First, he won election to County Commission against all odds. Then he served his constituents- all of them- with distinction, doing so in spite of flying bullets and poisonous politics. Finally, he found the nerve to write candidly and well about it all in Crashing the Commission, a gentle, terrifying stroll through the crazed corridors of power." Thanks to Becky Harmon. Mince Pies, one dozen miniature pies
Invalid Image LinkSold
Invalid Image Link
I am willing to make a dozen mince pies at a time convenient to both parties near Christmas. These are miniature, single-serving pies. Mince pies, if you were unsure, are spiced candied fruit pies eaten traditionally near Christmas in the UK. However, it is still technically illegal to eat them on Christmas Day in England due to Cromwell and his Puritan laws. But no one takes any notice, and Christmas Day would not be complete without a mince pie or two! I will try to make them vegetarian, but it depends on the 'mincemeat' I can source here (some use animal suet, most are vegetarian now though.) They will be freezable, too, so you can just pop one out of the freezer, heat it up, add cream or ice-cream, and save the rest for later! Thanks to Lizzie Roper. Apple Crazy - Movie & Dessert
Invalid Image LinkSold

We are going Apple Crazy this year with Frank Capra's "Lady for a Day." This is a wonderful, cheerful movie about an apple seller during the Depression whose daughter, raised in a French convent, believes that she is one of the New York Elite. When the daughter comes to visit with her noble fiance (and his snooty family), Apple Annie's friends band together to save the day. Sure it's Capra, but it's not corny, it's apple-y!

Guess what sort of desserts will be served!

Please join us at Jamie Adcock's gorgeous digs for appetizers and a look at her garden before the movie and lots of APPLE DESSERTS afterwards.

Saturday, June 15, 2013 at 6 pm. Thanks to Laura Broderick, Janette Kennedy, and Jamie Adcock. Minimum bid $18

Alexander Technique Lesson I feel taller! My face looks so relaxed! My headache went away. My posture is different. My voice sounds more resonant. These are some of the things students say after their first Alexander Technique lesson.

Taught worldwide for more than 100 years, the Alexander Technique is a practical method for learning to move with more ease and poise, and to develop a balanced and supportive posture. You may be surprised to discover how effortless “good posture” can be, and how pleasurable it feels to be more at ease in your own body.

The Alexander Technique is especially helpful to:
• People who are in physical discomfort, such as back pain caused by imbalanced posture; or neck, shoulder, or wrist pain caused by excess tension in working at the computer
• Performers, such as musicians, actors, public speakers, and athletes
• People who want to use the mind-body connection to calm their minds and feel more peaceful, and think more clearly

Teacher Lilly Sutton has a Master’s Degree in Education and is certified to teach through Alexander Technique International. You can learn more about the Alexander Technique at her website, www.LillySutton.com.

1 Hour CranioSacral Therapy Session CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a light-touch healing approach that can create dramatic improvements in your life!

CST releases tensions deep in the body to relieve pain and dysfunction and improve whole-body health and performance. Your body can only handle so much tension before the tissues begin to tighten and potentially affect the brain and spinal cord, otherwise known as your Central Nervous System. CST releases tension to allow the entire body to relax and self-correct. By freeing the central nervous system to perform at its best, CST naturally eliminates pain and stress, strengthens your resistance to disease, and enhances your health and well-being. The client is able to relax (fully clothed and under a blanket) for the entire session. CST can be used for relaxation or to help with specific issues such as chronic pain, headaches, insomnia, or any stress-related issue, including post-traumatic stress.

Brewer Tour - Asheville Craft Brews May 31-June 2, 2013 Asheville NC is a paradise for beer research. More than a dozen brewers make craft beers (microbrews) there, some of which are not even bottled (visitors drink the available supply!). John Bohstedt will lead a field trip on this weekend. On Friday evening, we'll meet at a delightful pub in the River Arts district, and probably move on to one or two more, depending on mood and mobility. Saturday midday we will try to tour a brewery or two, and then pub-crawl some more that evening. Sunday we will be escorted home by a pack of trained guide dogs -- or not! Participants will arrange their own lodging & transport (carpooling if possible). We have room for ten serious researchers, plus 2 to 4 designated drivers (free). For those research internships, bidding starts at $30. Thanks to Kathy & Jon Bohstedt. Minimum bid $30 10 0 000060.0 60 .0003E7 30 5/31/13 5:30 PM

Book Making Exploration We will cozy up and spend a warm Saturday exploring art making as a means of achieving a better understanding of ourselves. We will be making simple to construct accordion style books using collage and a plethora of other mediums, as desired.

All supplies are provided. We encourage participants to bring some personal collage materials -- photos, newspapers, magazines, fliers you tore off the bulletin board at the bus stop and those pressed leaves you've had sitting around for decades -- any bits and scraps that are interesting to you!

We will have a potluck lunch, with beverages provided by the hosts.
Everyone is encouraged to join us, regardless of experience or skill level. There is also no age limit, so bring the kids! We hope this will be a great way to get to know our community, and our selves, a little bit better! More details to come as our date approaches.

Saturday, January 19, 2013 at 10 am. Thanks to Lauren Hulse and Anne Whitney. Minimum bid $15
