Read to Me: Wine, Whimsey, and Tom Barlow’s Shorts No, not those shorts. We’re talking about the excellent short stories of First UU’s Tom (husband of Su Farnlacher) Barlow, whose mystery, science fiction, and crime stories have appeared in more than 70 literary journals and anthologies, including Best New Writing 2011 and Best American Mystery Stories 2013. Tom is also author of the short-story collection Welcome to the Goat Rodeo and the novel I’ll Meet You Yesterday. Join Peggy McKee and Steve Abbott for their own readings of several of Tom’s stories for this one-evening-only literary salon. Add wine, hors d’oeuvres, a few sweets, and Tom himself to discuss his work, and you have a best-seller of an evening for less than the cost of a best-seller. 16 2 .00025E7 25 10/22/16 7:00 PM N N N N

Don Jones' Painting from his "Big Bang" Series of Expressive Works
Invalid Image LinkInvalid Image Link
A fabulous opportunity to own this work by artist, therapist, minister, teacher and First UU member until his death in 2015. Don was an early pioneer in the field of art therapy and a founder of the national and local organizations. He taught courses in art and art therapy and was sought out nationally to give workshops and speeches. Don called himself a secular mystic. He had both realistic and abstract styles and loved exploring new ideas. The textural painting is 26" x 38." 1 1 .002E7 200 N N N N

Caribbean Island Rum Cruise 2016
Invalid Image LinkInvalid Image Link
Back by Request! Join us on our patio for a cruise through selected rums from various Caribbean islands. This is your chance to explore the world of rum.

With small servings, we’ll sample about six to eight rums and perhaps rum versions of a few classic cocktails and a tiki drink or two. Appetizers and dessert will be included. We'll include several others that weren't offered in 2016.

Ben, your skipper for this cruise, has explored the world of rum both independently and by attending large scale rum tastings, plus an actual rum tour with visits to seven distilleries in the Caribbean. After this evening, you’ll have a new appreciation for different styles of rum.

Recommended advance reading: “And a Bottle of Rum: A History of the New World in Ten Cocktails” by Wayne Curtis. If more history books had been written like this, I’d have majored in history.
