Of the four wines, The favorite of Susan would undoubtedly be the Cashmere, while Neal, a red wine fan, surprisingly enough loved the white Rhone. Domaine de Boissan 2012 Cotes du Rhone is a full bodied and fruity wine from the Rhone Valley of France. This white blend mainly contains Viognier and Grenache grapes, organically grown and hand-picked. The 2010 Bodegas Faustino is from the Rioja region of Spain and is a light and fruity red. Cline Cashmere 2010 is a California red blend done in more of a Bordeaux style. There is a rich and luscious feel to this fruity and somewhat complex wine, which evokes it name, Cashmere. The last selection is a 2013 Wente Vineyards Morning Fog Chardonnay estate grown in the Livermore Valley of California. During the first half of the 18th century, the abolition movement was at the forefront of American politics and Cincinnati was at the center of the fight. Our city was the “Queen City of the West” and an important bastion of the anti-slavery movement as the city sat on the banks of the river that separated slave from free. Our tour will begin at 10:00 at the Harriet Beecher Stowe House on Gilbert Ave. and Martin Luther King Drive. This was the home of Lyman Beecher perhaps the best known preacher in America and his soon to become famous daughter, Harriett. Beecher was a staunch and outspoken critic of Universalism and its belief in universal salvation. However, he became just as strong an ally in the fight against slavery. Next will come a brief stop at the birthplace of Ulysses Grant in Point Pleasant and then on to Ripley, Ohio for lunch on the Ohio River waterfront. After lunch, will be a visit to the John Parker House in Ripley. Parker was a freed slave who spent years as a conductor on the Underground Railroad. Next, we will drive up the hill behind Ripley to the newly renovated home of Reverend John Rankin, a good friend of the Beechers. His home was a hiding place on the “railroad” and it was his tales of helping escaping slaves that inspired Harriett to write “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”. Finally, we will return to Cincinnati for a dinner on the shores of the Ohio River and a friendly discussion of all we saw. Meals and entry fees to historic sites are all included in the package. Known as a great place for family vacations, this newly updated cabin is on Slick Rock Mountain in the Pisgah National Forest in the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina. It's a beautiful, professionally cleaned two bedroom, 1-1/2 bath home with almost new kitchen appliances, a living room with sleeper couch and a deck with grill. There's a 10 min walk to a swimming lake with kayaking, canoeing (bring your own?) and a beach. There is horseback riding, lots of hiking trails and many waterfalls nearby. One favorite, Sliding Rock, is a natural attraction, wide and gentle enough for kids and adults to slide down. It takes 6-7 hours to drive from Cincinnati to the cabin, and it is about an hour south of Asheville, NC. Small nearby cities are Brevard, NC and Hendersonville, NC. Both have a fun atmosphere, good restaurants, shops and festivals. Dates are still open.
