We will have no expert guidance (unless someone magically appears), so that this will indeed be a group effort to come to grips with a text we hear so much about, but which many of us have not had the opportunity to read. Unless someone else volunteers, Jerry Sattin will serve as moderator and undertake to do some supplemental reading to make sense of the text and its various interpretations. Movie and Discussion Join Brian Doherty for a showing of The Spy Who Came in from the Cold. We will examine a world not so far from our own, with its heroes, non-heroes and villains--and who knows which is which? and why?

The 1960s was "spy-happy." Dr. No, From Russia with Love, Goldfinger--all of these James Bond films started the super-spy craze. TV's The Man from UNCLE and Get Smart fed the craze by featuring or spoofing the same macho males and exotic villains. The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, produced and directed by Martin Ritt, was the antithesis of the popular mainstream spy thrillers. It portrayed a sordid world in which the good guys and bad guys are hard to tell apart. The protagonist, Alec Leamas, is part of a world that resolves into a study in gray.

Water and snacks will be provided.
