Join Brian Doherty for a showing of The Spy Who Came in from the Cold. We will examine a world not so far from our own, with its heroes, non-heroes and villains--and who knows which is which? and why? The 1960s was "spy-happy." Dr. No, From Russia with Love, Goldfinger--all of these James Bond films started the super-spy craze. TV's The Man from UNCLE and Get Smart fed the craze by featuring or spoofing the same macho males and exotic villains. The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, produced and directed by Martin Ritt, was the antithesis of the popular mainstream spy thrillers. It portrayed a sordid world in which the good guys and bad guys are hard to tell apart. The protagonist, Alec Leamas, is part of a world that resolves into a study in gray.
