Come join us at UUCR to observe the Sun safely using special solar telescopes. Sun spots, granulation, spicules, prominences, filaments, plages, and more may be visible. We'll begin with an indoor reception featuring Sun-themed snacks and a short talk about our nearest star. This will include essential information on how to observe the Sun safely. Next we'll head outside to use two special telescopes to see the Sun in ways you may not have imagined. First we'll look at photosphere (white light) using a Herschel Wedge on a 5" refractor made by Roland Christian of Astro-Physics. With a little luck we'll see sunspots, plages, and granulation. Next we'll view the chromosphere of the Sun (deep red), where only the light of glowing hydrogen gas will pass through a Fabry-Perot etalon made in Tucson, AZ and mated to a 6" refractor enabling us to view prominences, filaments, and spicules directly and safely. Attendees will be able to try the controls on the telescopes, moving them to see different parts of the Sun. There is no limit to the number of bidders on this item. The more the merrier! This is also appropriate for children 5 and older who may be interested in looking through a telescope. The date is currently TBD, depending on the weather and availability of space at UUCR (I'm working with Sandra to nail down the date).
