Brian Kerkvliet has been working with glass since 1977 and has an extensive list of awards. This bowl is an example of Zanfrico caneworking, one of his favorite techniques and very time consuming. First canes (long rods of glass) are created in a variety of colors, these are fused with other colors, stretched and/or twisted to create new canes of multiple colors and patterns. Sometimes the canes, when sliced into rounds, reveal a picture such as a face or a flower. By laying many of these slices side by side a repeating pattern or mosaic is created. These are then fused and the piece is blown into a vessel of some sort. Brian is also known locally for his work in permaculture and the many classes and events held at Inspiration Farm. Francoise Jean was born in Anglais, southern Haiti, in 1953. She moved to Port-au-Prince in 1967, then in 1968 began to paint with Petion Savain, depicting only children, refusing to paint adults. Since the death of Petion Savain in 1973, she has been working with the painter Jean Richard Coachy. In 1978, one of Jean’s paintings was awarded the Young Painters’ Special Prize in a competition organized by the Museum of Haitian Art at St. Pierre’s College on the theme of rural development. The painting was purchased to represent the Year of the Child at the FAO in Germany. Jean’s work has been exhibited in Haiti, Martinique and Guadeloupe (1977-1982).
