"Sundays Two" by Danny Gotham with Glenn Mehrbach
Invalid Image LinkInvalid Image Link
Sundays Two (with Glenn Mehrbach) is the followup to my "Sundays" album. It features both solos (me on guitar and Glenn on piano) and duets, and features two of Glenn's originals, as well as several other selections (hymns, jazz and folk standards) that we have played at the Community Church--in services or special events--over the years. Glenn is one of the finest musicians I know, and this is an album that we both take great pride in. About Danny: go here. https://dannygotham.net 1 1 000015.0 15 .00015E7 15

Sundays is a collection of music that I've performed at my church over the years. It's very, very quiet, simple, short (about one-half as long as "Guitarheel"!), and sweet. "Luzerne" by Danny Gotham
Invalid Image LinkInvalid Image Link
Named after the lake in my native upstate NY, Luzerne is my first solo CD. It's straightforward, and uncluttered, and has lots of great songs on it. Among the writers: John Lennon, Steve Goodman, John Fahey, and me. Among the players: Peter Ostroushko, Tony Markellis, Stringfellows, and my Racquette River Rounder buds. I am pretty happy with this recording, warts and all. About Danny: go here.https://dannygotham.net 5 5 000015.0 15 .00015E7 15

"Solo" CD by Danny Gotham
Invalid Image LinkInvalid Image Link
New in 2018! "Solo" is the followup to "A Good Set," my 2015 CD. I got to thinking about how a typical solo show is two sets, so I recorded another album. I made 10 new tracks (the second "set"), added them to the tracks from "A Good Set" (the first "set"), and thus one CD with all of the tracks. "Guitarheel" by Danny Gotham

Guitarheel is my magnum opus. It is 72 minutes long (whew!) and the twenty cuts on it feature nineteen musical friends. Among them: Robin and Linda Williams, Peter Ostroushko, Orrin Star and Nina Gerber. Tons of guitar and mandolin. Everything from Hank Williams to Vivaldi to Charlie Parker to George Gershwin to Woody Guthrie to several originals from yours truly. This one also has a twenty page booklet. I have never worked as hard on anything as I did on this album.

"repast" by Danny Gotham
Invalid Image LinkInvalid Image Link
repast is a double CD. I spent about two years on it; it is a special project to commemorate turning sixty and being (more or less) in one piece. I have a huge supporting cast, and the music reflects my eclectic tastes: An original mandolin waltz, a Puerto Rican cuatro piece, Count Basie's "Down for Double", a solo ukulele rendition of "Something", you name it. The one real departure for me on this album are the tracks featuring some good friends doing lead vocals. Thirty-two tracks; about an hour and forty three minutes of music. If "Guitarheel" was my magnum opus, this is a double. A very filling "meal"....Guaranteed. About Danny: go here. https://dannygotham.net 1 1 000025.0 25 .00025E7 25

Czech Fairytales

The authors (Karel Jaromir Erben & Bozena Nemocova) compiled some of the most beautiful Czech fairytales handed down orally over the years. Although the folktales in the book contain echoes of many familiar plots & motifs from other European legends & fables, they captivate the reader with their entirely unique exotic appeal & offer an interesting insight into old Slavic myths, customs & traditions. This charming book (in English) with beautiful illustrations was bought by the donor in a charming bookstore in Czech several years ago with thought that it would be a great gift to someone, including myself. Have read the book (reading level probably age 13 and above but book is for all ages) and appears new. . . “Once upon a time someone in the Queendom/Kingdom of CC bid very high on this book to bestow great riches to CC . . .” 1 0 000020.0 20 .0001E7 10

The winning bidder wins the right to assign a book for the minister to read. That book will go to the top of Thom's reading list! After reading it, Thom will meet with you to talk about the book. Editor's Note: Being able to tell a UU minister to do anything is actually priceless (since we value their freedom to say/think for themselves) so the value was revised to reflect this.

By J. Walker McSpadden. 1923 edition published by Thomas Y. Crowell Company. Hardcopy found at a library book sale years ago. Robin Hood is considered one of the best-known tales of English folklore & stories of him & his Merry Thieves have been written by various authors over the years. In popular culture, the term “Robin Hood” is often used to describe a heroic outlaw or rebel against tyranny, robbing the rich to give to the poor. I am not sure which member of my family collected the ash, i.e. whether it was my (Susan's) father (Pop on the label) or my brother who lived in Spokane. The ash has been stored in a 4" jelly jar since it was collected.

we’ll have Apple Pie with ice cream for dessert. Everything home-made.

From the Blanchards "Charles and Lois are delightful hosts and gave us an evening full of laughter, stories, and YouTube songs (especially oldies). This year, they are offering the same menu with a different dessert. Everything we had was delicious with more than enough available for seconds. We left with full bellies and happy hearts! Embroidered Cranes in a Tree
Invalid Image LinkSold
Invalid Image Link
We bought this embroidered piece when we were in Hong Kong in 1996 (before the handover) and had it double matted and framed. We have enjoyed it in Chatham County, Florida, Virgina, and, now, here in Durham. We are having to make some tough choices about what we can keep and what can stay as we plan to downsize to an apartment next year and have decided to let another bird or embroidery lover enjoy this one. The framed size is 14" W x 24" H.

The Ancient One by Joan Meade
Invalid Image LinkSold
Invalid Image Link
This original painting by The Community Church's own artist, Joan Meade, was hand-painted and brought to us in Florida when we lived there from 2005 to 2012. It was perfect for our Florida home so we bought it on the spot! We have enjoyed it in two houses (VA and NC) since then but, alas, it will not fit in our next home, a much smaller apartment. Perhaps this painting, which has depth because of Joan's special techniques, can grace your home or office for awhile. it is 12" W x 24" H and is signed by the artist on the front and on the back with its name.

To see a larger photograph and Joan's photograph, check out A10 under Art for Walls HERE.

No Cure for Being Human (And Other Truths I Need to Hear)

This book was written by Kate Bowler, the same author who wrote Everything Happens for a Reason - And Other Lies I've Loved" which Rev. Thom referred to in his September 18th sermon, "Who Cares?" On the back cover, Anne Lamott states:"Kate Bowler has paid through the nose to become a writer of uncommon spiritual wisdom, coupling an amazing sense of humor and a heart full of love. She fills me with hope." Kate Bowler is not a UU, but this book was on Rev. Thom's sabbatical reading list so I decided to get it and read it. I agree with Anne Lamott. 1 0 000017.0 17 .00005E7 5

"A wonderful world of butterflies and orchids in tropical gardens."

I bought this DVD so that I could look at beautiful scenes as I did T'ai Chi Chih but never really used it. The gardens, flowers, and butterflies are absolutely beautiful. There are three 10-minute films set to relaxing piano music and two 15-minute films of longer images with the natural sounds of crickets, tropical birds, and small waterfalls. Four extra tracks show four different waterfalls in tropical or jungle settings with orchids, koi fish, and fresh, green plants.

There are different playback features so that you can play one track continuously, play all of the films with music, play just those with natural sounds, or play all the films in a continuous loop.

Storytelling for Healing Workshop

Five people are invited to participate in an experiential 2-hour workshop that incorporates creative expression, mindfulness, and written and verbal processing with clinical mental health counselor Alexa Adamo Valverde, APC, LCMHCA, NCC. We will explore concepts from the book "Retelling the Stories of Our Lives: Everyday Narrative Therapy to Draw Inspiration and Transform Experience" (recommended reading, not required). To take place in February 2023, either in person at church or online, depending on Covid. (Date and time chosen is estimate, will depend on availability of auction winner participants.)

"Our lives and their pathways are not fixed in stone; instead they are shaped by story. The ways in which we understand and share the stories of our lives therefore make all the difference. If we tell stories that emphasize only desolation, then we become weaker. If we tell our stories in ways that make us stronger, we can soothe our losses and ease our sorrows. Learning how to re-envision the stories we tell about ourselves can make an enormous difference in the ways we live our lives." - D. Denborough

Stupid Things I Won't Do When I Get Old by Steven Petrow
Invalid Image LinkSold

I bought this book thinking that it might be a good candidate for Rare Women's annual book but it would really be more beneficial for people in their 50s and 60s. The subtitle says that the book is "a highly judgmental, unapologetically honest accounting of all the things our elders are doing wrong." It is witty and relatable. Steven Petrow lives in Hillsborough and has his name on a local (unnamed) Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) so that he won't make at least one mistake that his parents did. Hardcover.

Santa Clara pottery is known for its distinctive glossy black or red finishes. To achieve blackware, the potters fire polished vessels in a smothered fire (i.e., a fire with less oxygenation). This firing technique turns the clay of the entire pot black. This small owl (2" H x 1-3/4" W) was purchased at the Santa Clara Pueblo in 1993. Mayan Bowl
Invalid Image LinkSold

We bought this unusual hand-made pottery bowl (6" D x 3.5"H) from a UU friend in Fort Myers, FL. He had brought it home from Central or South America on one of his many trips there and estimated that it was made 200-400 years ago. We purchased it shortly after our granddaughter (who has some Mayan ancestors) arrived from Guatemala with plans to give it to her when she became an adult. Alas, her parents divorced many years ago, and we lost contact with her (her choice) after she turned 18 so it is time to part ways with this momento. 1 0 000050.0 50 .0001E7 10

Intro to Google Drive & Google Docs
Invalid Image LinkInvalid Image Link
In this 1.5-hour session, you will learn the basics for using Google Docs & Google Drive.

Google Docs is the online app compatible with Microsoft Word, used for creating, updating, downloading and sharing documents on all computers and mobile devices. So we'll start with Docs.

Then we'll see how to use Google Drive as a safe place for all your files that puts them within reach from any smartphone, tablet, or computer. Files in Drive – like your Google Docs and Microsoft Word docs, videos, photos, and other documents – are organized in folders and backed up safely so you can’t lose them. Once there, you can easily invite others to view, edit, or leave comments on any of your files or folders.

There will be plenty of time to you to experiment with creating and shareing new Docs and Folders.

Note: It helps to have a Google account and the Drive & Docs apps on your mobile device before class starts.

From Age-ing to Sage-ing: A Revolutionary Approach to Growing Older
Invalid Image LinkInvalid Image Link
The authors are Zalman Schachter-Shalomi and Ronald S. Miller. Originally published in 1997 and reissued in 2014.

From the back cover: "In this inspiring and informative guide, Reb Zalman shares his wisdom and experience. He shows you how to create an aging process for yourself that is full of adventure, passion, mystery, and fulfillment, rather than anxiety. Using scientific research - both neurological and psychological - Reb Zalman offers techniques that will expand your horizons beyond the narrow present to a grand and enduring eternity. By harnessing the power of the spirit, he provides an effective way for you to use your own experiences to nurture, heal, and perhaps even free a younger generation from the prison of how we typically regard aging."

Who Will Take Care of Me When I'm Old? by Joy Loverde
Invalid Image LinkSold
Invalid Image Link
My favorite chapter title is for Ch. 15: "Just Shoot Me" Is Not a Plan.

From the back cover: "Living with chronic illness, dealing with a lifetime of accumulations, worrying about money, fighting off loneliness and isolation, change... it seems we prepare for everything in life except how to handle the challenges of later years. Whether you have family ready to assist or are navigating these years on your own, a sudden change can leave you scrambling to pick up the pieces - or take decision-making power out of your hands entirely. To ensure your own care, you must be prepared. Are you ready?"

"This empowering guide shares practical advice for everyone - married couples and solo agers alike. It all starts with a plan, and Loverde helps you make one with checklists, worksheets, strategies, and resource lists to start answering the important questions."

But all of these things offer only the illusion of control. How to live well, even joyously, while accepting our mortality - that is the vitally important philosophical challenge of this book."

This Chair Rocks - A Manifesto against Ageism by Ashton Applewhite

This is the book that Rare Women read and discussed in 2021-2022. Anne Lamott wrote this review: "Wow. This book totally rocks. It arrived on a day when I was deep in confusion and sadness about my age - everything about it, from my invisiblity to my neck. Within four or five wise, passionate pages, I had found insight, illumination, and inspiration. I never use the word 'emposer,' but this book has empowered me." Hardback.

Brilliant Charming Bastard by Stella Fosse
Invalid Image LinkSold
Invalid Image Link
I don't have much to show for how I spent the time during the pandemic, but C3HUU member, Jody Savage, does - this novel under her pen name of Stella Fosse. It draws upon the time she spent working in the biotechnology industry in California and is a fun read. From one of the quotes on the back cover: "You will love the way it celebrates older women's partnerships, inventiveness, professional acumen, and sexuality... with plot twists galore and non-stop good-natured humor." As the front cover says, "getting rich is the best revenge." 1 0 000013.0 13 .00005E7 5

Make A Quilted Placemat (or two) with the UU QUUilters
Invalid Image LinkInvalid Image Link
Join members of the UU QUUilters group in the Gathering Room at the Church for an all-morning quilting session. You will get to make a set of two placemats to take home. Choose from an array of kits, each featuring one of two different quilt designs for piecing the top of your placemats, and one of two different methods for quilting them (either the “Quilt as You Go” or the “Pillow Turn” method). Each kit will provide illustrated directions, precut fabric and batting. Members of the UU QUUilters group will be available for personalized, 1 - 1 or 1-2 instruction and assistance. The morning will include a simple snack, and much chance for fellowship.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own sewing machines plus basic sewing tools (scissors, thread, seam ripper, pins). All other needed equipment will be available to share. (If you wish to come, but it is not possible for you to bring your own sewing machine, please contact Sandy Young at 919-370-6501.)

Signed by the author. A companion volume to When I am an Old Woman I Shall Wear Purple. In this volume, women reflect on the choices they have made, from childhood to old age. Through stories, poems, and photographs, we see how women's alternatives are both extended and limited by personal belief systems, ethnic and cultural identity, class and economic status, age, and gender.

When I am an Old Woman I Shall Wear Purple edited by Sandra Martz
Invalid Image LinkInvalid Image Link
An enchanging collection of writings and photographs that evoked the beauty, humor, and courage of women living in their later years and telling the endearing moments of joy - and passion - to be found in the rich and varied world of midlife and beyond. Incudes the familiar poem, "Warning," by Jenny Joseph that begins:

When I am an old woman I shall wear purple,
With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.

We can prepare it together, and while it bakes, we will enjoy some of the same appetizers ancient Egyptians would have relished, followed by a meal of roasted vegetables, and meat, poultry or fish prepared with delicate blends of nuts and spices, and accompanied by light beer, served warm the Egyptian way, and other beverages of the period. There will be fruits for dessert with Rekhmire’s Tiger Nut cakes accompanied by sweet wine laced with mead and mint tea to refresh us all at the end. (Chapel Hill 27517)

Moose 4-Hole Ocarina
Invalid Image LinkSold
Invalid Image Link
Enjoy entertaining your friends with this moose 4-hole ocarina, hand-made from pottery clay. Songs in the songbook include: Amazing Grace, Will the Circle Be Unbroken, and many more favorites. This item was purchased from Maggi Fuhriman (mostly animals) in the early 1980s when we were on a family vacation at Priest Lake, ID (perhaps the coldest lake in the lower 48). The moose is 4 1/2" from the tip of its tail to the tip of its nose and 3 1/4" wide at the antlers. And, yes, you do blow through its tail to make music. 1 0 000025.0 25 .00005E7 5

It is now a 31-piece set, :-). Your 3+ year old will enjoy building the patterns in the booklet as well as creating new arrangements with these versatile magnetic pieces. Richard-Ginori "Italian Fruits" Cachepot
Invalid Image LinkInvalid Image Link
A fine bone china decorative and pretty piece by the reknown Italian porcelain firm of Richard-Ginori. Hand-painted botanicals and 24-karat gilt trim highlight this piece - a lovely receptacle for your special potted plant. It is signed with the makers name and Made In Italy along with Finest In China Since 1735. The pattern is number 01531 and called Italian Fruits or Antico Doccia and depicts a colorful fruit and flowers motif on the front, sides and back. The Rococo figural relief leaf handles are gold gilded. There is a painted blue scallop design beneath the top rim. The bottom and top rim is gilded as well. The approximate dimensions are 6 1/2" tall by 6 1/2" across the top (handles not included in measurements). This was a wedding gift in 1968. The value is a best guess since one was offered on 1stDIBS for $650. There are some additional pictures there. 1 1 000150.0 150 .0002E7 20
