Facilitated Book Study of "Ghettoside" by Jill Leovy
Invalid Image LinkInvalid Image Link
Jill Leovy's narrative journal, "Ghettoside: A True Story of Murder in America" discusses the black on black violence in South Los Angeles where murder has been referred to as "The Monster." When the criminal justice system fails to respond to violent injury and death, homicide becomes endemic and results in a grave mistrust of the police and the justice system. Leovy, a writer for the LA Times, writes about the pain, trauma, and despair that drive the victims, their families, and friends to get guns and take care of things themselves. The people in her narrative, from killers and victims, to hookers, drug addicts, and good and bad cops, are all written about in the detailed social context of these communities.
I will facilitate a book study providing materials for outlining this narrative, writing character sketches, and delving into its many themes for discussion and sharing. Three sessions, May 20 at 3 to 4 p.m. Orientation and Materials. June 3, and June 24, from 3 to 5 at my house, 415 Anchor Lane #104, West Sacramento, CA 95605, 916-947-1771. Book must be purchased separately.

How much do you love Thai Curry?
Invalid Image LinkSold
Invalid Image Link
The essence of Thai Curry is the Thai Curry Paste. Yellow, Red, Green, the paste is made by pounding together a dozen or so ingredients – coriander seeds, cumin seeds, chilies, lemongrass, galangal, shallots and on and on. It’s intensive work, but the resulting paste is the base for a delicious, complex, happy-making and homey Thai Curry that you can easily make at home any night of the week.

Note: Making Thai Curry will require picking up additional ingredients from Asian markets. Visiting these markets is part of the fun of making the Curry.

This item includes
• Enough Yellow, Red and Green curry paste to make about 4 4-person servings of each. The curries will be packaged in individual cooking portions that will live in your freezer. Just pull them out when you need them.
• Recipes for each of the Curries.
• A list of some Asian grocery stores where you can find the additional ingredients you need to make the Curries.
• Some starter ingredients that are common to the recipes: fish sauce, palm sugar, coconut milk and Jasmine rice.

Guided River Trip in a Two-Person Inflatable Kayak
Invalid Image LinkSold
Invalid Image Link
Offered by: Dr. Mark Bowen (Senior Fisheries Biologist).
I have 20+ years experience leading boating trips, including navigating the white-water rapids of the Grand Canyon in 2011. I look forward to offering the successful bidder a seat in my two-seater inflatable kayak (IK), "Lady Marmalade", and a 1:1 guided tour of my favorite section of the American River. I will collect you at River Bend Park and drive you to Sailor Bar Park where we will put in to the water. We will kayak for approximately 2.5 hours through waters that are very familiar to me, before heading back to River Bend Park. On the way, we can discuss all about the fisheries, birds and wildlife of the American River. We won't intend on getting wet, but as a sensible safety precaution the successful bidder must be able to swim and be physically capable of helping me carry the kayak about 150 yards from the river to the River Bend parking location. In summary: I will provide my boating expertise, fisheries and wildlife knowledge, the kayak, a life jacket, and a paddle, plus a little space in my dry bag for your personal items (e.g. car keys). The date and time is flexible will be cooperatively arranged between us in advance.

2 Lessons - Learning to Improvise on Piano
Invalid Image LinkSold
Invalid Image Link
About 20 years ago I had a friend show me quickly how to make chords on a piano and improvise around them. Since then I've been fooling people who hear me play thinking that I took piano lessons. I can look up basic chords to most songs and in minutes play a decent sounding version of it. I've taught for fun other people over the years and they're always shocked at how easy it is to learn. I'm NOT going to teach you to read sheet music (traditional piano lessons) but instead how to improvise around chords (no previous music experience needed at all.)

Sample of me playing in this style: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQp4q4ruIaA

We can do the two lessons at UUSS on the piano - after service or during the week sometime. Two lessons will be all you need to learn this style and practice and play on your own!

We’ll imagine ourselves living off the land as the Plains Miwok tribe did.
We’ll also traverse the Wetlands Walk Trail and see the migratory waterfowl and maybe a few Sandhill Cranes.
This is a leisurely three-and-a-half-mile walk on a trail that is unpaved in sections and paved in others.
We meet at the CRP Visitor Center parking lot at 8:30 am.
Please come prepared with a hat or visor, sunblock, water, closed toed shoes, insect repellant, snacks and binoculars.
Following our walk, I'll provide lunch at the Visitor Center picnic area. All diets considered.
