Spaghetti Western Crate Who can forget the iconic Sergio Leone/Clint Eastwood “Man with No Name” trilogy? This crate has it all—a DVD set of the 4 classic “Man with No Name” films, and an additional 2 movie DVD set of Akiro Kurosawa’s Samurai/Ronin films, “Yojimbo” and “Sanjuro“ that inspired the spaghetti-western genre. And, to fulfill the viewing experience, culturally-appropriate adult beverages that you can easily visualize the main characters imbibing in various scenes. On top of that, there are culturally-specific snacks for the discerning viewer. All this and the culturally-suitable noodles (think Spaghetti and Udon!). 1 0 000110.0 110 .00025E7 25

UUs Go WIld Who isn’t aware of the Pacific Crest Trail and thru-hiking after all of the recent ”Wild”-inspired media hype. Perhaps you’ve hiked parts of the PCT. Perhaps you’ve day-dreamed about long-distance thru hiking. Mark, and his faithful side-kick, Ilona, will share their experiences, planning, training tips, food and equipment choices, and images from their 900+ miles of thru-hiking. The event starts with a modest training hike in Watershed Park (sure, it’s not mountainous, but it’s convenient!). Then we return to their humble abode, where you can see (and heft!) their equipment choices, view a video recounting of their journeys on the PCT, JMT, and AZT, and then enjoy your choice of a trail dinner or a zero-day repast (the latter complete with micro-brews, a popular choice with the thru-hikers we’ve met!) Personally, I recommend the latter dinner, but there are times when trail food is simply divine. Each hiker will receive an ultra-light goodie bag with essential trail edibles. 6 5 000040.0 40 .00025E7 25 6/18/16 3:00 PM

Raise the Paddle This year’s Raise the Paddle* is for our Memorial Garden. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have an inviting outdoor space for memorial services, for remembering our loved ones, for peaceful contemplation anytime? Your donations will help to create a memorial garden surrounding our Columbarium. The Columbarium was installed and dedicated in January 2015. Current plans include moving the lamppost and associated electrical box, installing a hard scape terrace surface around the columbarium to connect existing walkways and stairs, adding a retaining wall and large rocks and a railing around the back, a bench or two, and plantings.

What a way to honor those who sustained our church home and community allowing us to be a liberal religious presence within the greater community!

The plans are formed. Bids (6 in all) received. The Executive Team and OUUC Board of Trustees have provided direction and encouragement. The Building and Grounds Committee has walked us through deciding design and contractor details.

Our target goal is $20,000. Let’s all join together to Raise the Paddle with bids of all sizes in order to complete the Memorial Garden and see the blooming of a nearly 15 years long project.

*All donations to Raise the Paddle are undesignated gifts to the church, a tax-exempt organization. If there are any funds remaining after the Memorial Garden is completed, or if the project is interrupted, the Board of Trustees will use the donations for the general good of the church.

3rd Annual Shelton Homebrew Boot Camp Join Brewmaster Brian Walsh at his stainless steel brewery in Shelton to learn how to brew a 15 gallon all-grain batch of “Jack’s Nostalgia”, a pre-Prohibition ale, brewed in homage to his Grandfather. On auction night each winning bidder will receive a copy of the recipe to be used, a growler and the esteemed title of Assistant Brewer.

Assistant Brewers will be guided through the major stages of the brewing cycle: Grain Bill; Water Prep; Milling; Mash-in; Yeast Prep; Sparging; Boiling; Hop Additions; Chilling; Yeast Pitching; Fermentation; Conditioning; Yeast Harvesting; Kegging; Sampling and Clean-up. This entire process usually takes about 6 weeks: but through the magic of compressed time as pioneered by Julia Child, we can do it in one day. Yes, I said all in one day!

On Boot Camp day, we will work with 3 different batches of the same beer. The brew team will start batch #3 and take it to the Fermentation stage; batch #2 will have been prepared by me a few weeks earlier and have completed the Fermentation stage, and we will use it to demonstrate Kegging and Yeast Harvesting. Batch #1 will also have been prepared by me still earlier and be used to demonstrate Sampling and growler filling.

A bonus for Home Brew Boot Camp will be SAUERKRAUT. During the Boiling stage, the Brewmaster will demonstrate Sauerkraut making using the world famous Ron Sanderson lactic acid methodology.

Boot Camp starts at 9:30 and we will be finished around 4:00, rain or shine. Lunch will be served, probably during the Mash-in protein/starch conversion rests. (I’m thinking pub food here). At the end of the day, each Assistant Brewer will take home a growler of beer drawn from batch #1. Six (6) weeks later they will receive a quart of beautiful Sauerkraut.

Assistant Brewers must wear boots and promise to be very safety conscious; we will be working with fire, hot water and heavy buckets. Boot Camp day will be either (1) on a Saturday in late August/Early September or (2) November 5th, which is National Learn how to Brew Day. The votes of the Assistant Brewers will decide the day. Questions? Contact Brian Walsh @ 402-2008.

Eat Like a Guest at the White House: Annual Southeast Olympia Progressive Dinner What can you have in common with movie stars Bradley Pitt, Diane Keaton, George Clooney, Elizabeth Taylor, Sean Penn, Bradley Cooper, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus? They have all been guests at White House State Dinners. And you too can eat like a guest at the White House at this year’s Southeast Olympia Progressive Dinner hosted by Melanie and Tim Ransom, Joe and Bonnie Shorin, Mark Swanson and Ilona Hruska, and Mary Welsh and Jeff Goltz. Though black tie is not expected (discouraged actually), you will dine on the favorite dishes from the White House during the administrations of our “progressive presidents.” Possibilities include John F. Kennedy’s fish chowder, Teddy Roosevelt’s creamed oysters, Martha Jefferson’s chicken pudding, and Richard Nixon’s cottage cheese with ketchup. (Strike the last one; Nixon was not a progressive by the standards of his day.) In between courses, stroll the streets of Southeast Olympia, engage in some Presidential trivia for prizes, and share memories of our progressive past and hopes for a progressive future. 8 -1 000075.0 75 .0004E7 40 7/9/16 5:00 PM

Quadrennial Election Night Party This is the quadrennial election OUUC election night party hosted by Jeff Goltz and Mary Welsh. We held it in 2000, we skipped it in 2004 (it took years to recover from 2000), but we revived it in 2008 and again in 2012. It is time to try it one more time!

There will be ample food (enough for to make it dinner), drink (enough to help you celebrate or numb the pain), Kleenex (remember the 2008 party!), and company. And just in case anyone may be interested, we will have information on how to emigrate to Canada. Whether you are a political junkie, a novice, or just someone scared about the future of our country, this is where you will want to be on November 8. (OUUC members and friends of all political persuasions are welcome.)

We start at 5 pm (when the polls close in Ohio!). We go until the election is over or is headed to court!
