Oil portrait painted from life
Invalid Image LinkSold

“If you could say it in words, there would be no reason to paint.”
- Edward Hopper
“We see ourselves when other people see us.”
- Mickalene Thomas

Sitting for a painted portrait involves taking time out of normal life, of sitting still, being looked at and listened to, listening and sharing. In the age of the instant digital, online selfie, this process contrasts with its slowness, intensity and physical presence. It is a reminder that we are not pixels, that personal relations are important and require time and presence.
I will paint your portrait from a live sitting, sized up to 10 x 10 inches. This process requires the subject to sit still for 15 minutes at a time. A minimum of a 3 hour session is required; after every 15 minutes of sitting, we’ll take a five minute break. See examples at www.maryannficker.com/faces or in the Unity Gallery at UUCM.

Two Sixty Minute Floats at Salt Float Center Welcome to a world of floating…

Floating involves lying on your back in an 8’ x 5’ room or pod that has 10 inches of water in it, of which close to 1000 lbs. of Epsom salt has been dissolved. The room is completely sound and lightproof. The Epsom salt provides a high buoyancy and the water temperature matches that of the surface of your skin. Combined, these two effects give the sensation that there actually is no water and that you are just floating. The drastic reduction of gravity, combined with the complete silent darkness, initiates a reduction in your cortisol (stress hormone) levels and, consequently, a reduction in bodily inflammation. This deep relaxation and complete comfort unlocks and unburdens your mind while your body heals. Floating is known to unleash a flow-state of creativity and can help breakthrough mental blocks you might be experiencing. Once the session is over, most experience a post-float euphoria which can last days where you are focused, unburdened and at peace.

There are two room-sized suites and one pod. Take your pick! Two sessions for couples (separately) or two floats for an individual.

Please review the conditions under which you cannot float:
- If you have colored or permed your hair within 10 days
- Keratin treatments can be affected by the highly saline water
- If you are under the influence of any drug or alcohol
- If you have epilepsy or serious mental conditions
- If you have infectious skin or respiratory disorders
- If you have any open wounds
- If you are under the age of 18 and do not have a parent or guardian with you

Come eat, drink (and possibly die) at the "Murder at Poe's Raven" Dinner Party. This event will recall the Ortmans parties of the past. It is described as follows: "You have received an invitation to a raven party at the Poe Mansion in the gloomy crime-ridden city of Wraith’s Cove. The town gossips are chattering about the disreputable people on Eddie Poe’s guest list. What could Eddie be thinking? Could it be that Eddie has finally gone mad? It appears that at least the Poe Mansion’s in dire need of assistance. Ever since Eddie’s housekeeper quit, the estate is in shambles. Nevertheless, you are intrigued by the thought of a Gothic dinner party held in honor of a fiendish bird – even if the group of ruffians may cause chaos. Chaos can be fun sometimes, right?" 18 0 000050.0 50 .00025E7 25 9/28/19 7:00 PM

The Positive Pianist; How Flow Can Bring Passion to Practice and Performance In The Positive Pianist: How Flow Can Bring Passion to Practice and Performance, author Dr. Thomas J. Parente applies the concept of flow to the practice of piano playing, demonstrating how student musicians can experience jot, confidence and optimal learning from succeeding at something that challenges them to an engaging level. By using Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's theory of flow to musical performance, Parente shows that linking productivity and enjoyment in piano playing has a positive impact on students, motivating them to practice more in order to experience flow again; this creates optimal learning conditions for piano practicing. 5 3 000010.0 10 .0001E7 10

Personalized I Ching Session

Facing a difficult decision? Perhaps the I Ching help. The I Ching (or the "Book of Change") is a an ancient Chinese book providing a method of divination that is more than 3000 years old. This updated version of the I Ching, translated and published in 1963, involves the tossing of coins six times and recording the results to create a hexagram that is linked to a specific numbered outcome. I've been working with the I Ching for 25 years and I have found that the answers, while not always crystal clear, can to be extraordinarily useful in helping determine my heart's desire. The session takes roughly 30 minutes, to be scheduled in my home at your convenience, and of course strict confidentiality applies. 3 -1 000050.0 50 .00025E7 25

It's that time again! Come visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art and receive a
personal tour of the Arms and Armor galleries by the Museum's Armorer, Ted Hunter. You've heard it was cool, but only the auction winners will find out if the rumors are true! The Department of Arms and Armor has almost 1,000 treasures on display, from prehistory up to the 19th century. A Museum staff member since 2001, Ted will take you through the galleries, discussing the collection and his personal favorites, after which you will have the rest of the day to enjoy everything else the Museum has to offer (which is a lot)! We will start in the newly installed galleries of ancient arms, and will also see the latest special exhibition. Museum entrance is included (normally $25). Meet February 9, 2018, at 10 am in the Museum’s Great Hall.

Modernism in Montclair Hike and Dinner
Invalid Image LinkInvalid Image Link
Join us for a late afternoon and evening around good food and modernist art and architecture. We will start off with a hike to sites that Robert Smithson and Donald Judd went to (hikes are about 10 minutes long and really quite easy!) and which Smithson wrote about in his essay "The Crystal Land." One site is also the site of the Montclair Hawk Watch, so, with luck, we will see some birds of prey (last time we saw five Turkey vultures fly close by). We will conclude with dinner at the Bell-Varnelis residence on Highland Avenue, a modern prefab made by the Deck House Corporation and thoroughly renovated by Kazys Varnelis and Jennifer Bell.

Mobility issues: The hike can be quite level, although the hawkwatch is not, but we do have a short flight of stairs in our house since it is a split level. There are lots of stairs down to our house, but you can park at the bottom of our driveway and then there are only three steps down to the front door area and the short flight inside.

Introduction to Eurorack Modular Synthesis. Quantity: 2. Value $80, minimum bid
Invalid Image LinkInvalid Image Link
Ever want to make music or just weird sounds on one of those 1970s-style synthesizers made up of modules connected together by patch cables? Learn the basics of Eurorack analog modular synthesis, from voltage controlled oscillators, filters, voltage controlled amplifiers to modulation sources, sequencers, and utility modules. We’ll put together a generative (self-playing patch) in a private lesson lasting an hour or two in Kazys’s studio. If you like beer, we will even have a beer or two serve as a modulation source for us. There will be one person per lesson and two lessons are available. I've got a very shaky grasp of conventional music theory, so you're not going to get a ton of that.

You’ll learn how Eurorack will help you "never maintain cash savings again!" And how you can use VCVRack on a (Mac, Windows, or Linux) computer to get part way there for free.

2 Tickets to Clueless, The Musical at The New Group
Invalid Image LinkInvalid Image Link
The New Group is an award-winning Off-Broadway theater in New York. The highest bid will receive a PAIR of tickets to CLUELESS, THE MUSICAL.

Amy Heckerling takes us back to 90s Beverly Hills with this musical version of her beloved film "Clueless," a modern spin on Jane Austen’s "Emma?." With her singular voice, she gives us a score that reimagines 90s hits into ingenious parodies and yearning monologues for her lovesick characters. Director Kristin Hanggi (Rock of Ages) and choreographer Kelly Devine (Come from Away) drive this fresh take on the story of Cher (Dove Cameron), a girl so psychotically optimistic she can’t see that her bungling attempts at playing Cupid disguise her own fashion-plated isolation.

Performances run 11/20/18 - 1/12/19. Subject to availability.
