Hamlet Doubt thou the stars are fire,
Doubt that the sun doth move,
Doubt truth to be a liar,

But never doubt what a great time will be had on Sunday, September 17 (subject to change), when Professor Richard Goffman will present a three-hour interactive multimedia version of his nine-hour freshman literature unit on The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, by William Shakespeare. Participants will view more than a dozen different examples of performances by great actors past and present; learn about Hamlet's roots in history and literature; enact scenes and deliver soliloquies; duel with swords, not all of which will be tainted with fast-acting poison; and try not to wind up dead on the floor as most of the characters in Hamlet do. Light, non-poisoned refreshments will be served.

McCabe & Mrs. Miller Critic Nathaniel Rich comments, "After the startling success of M*A*S*H, a war movie without a war, Robert Altman set out to make what he called 'a western that wasn't a western.' In M*A*S*H (1970), the filmmaker had gleefully disposed of genre conventions—the battle scenes, the grim heroism, the appeals to patriotic pride—and he intended to do the same with his adaptation of McCabe, Edmund Naughton’s 1959 novel about an itinerant gambler who tries to defend a small town from the predations of a powerful mining company." McCabe is an anti-hero for our time and this film is, as Roger Ebert offered in 1999, "a perfect film. Some spend their lives trying, but always fall short. Robert Altman has made a dozen films that can be called great in one way or another, but one of them is perfect, and that one is McCabe & Mrs. Miller." Strong praise from a formidable critic, and we shall gather on an October Sunday afternoon to see if we agree. But even if we don't, we shall have some veggies, laughs and drinks to enjoy during the screening. 25 8 000000.0 0 .0002E7 20 10/22/17 2:00 PM

Hike and Picnic: Hyper Humus Marsh and Wildlife Area Join Jeff and Hal, from 10 until 2, in enjoying the incredible beauty of marshland flora and fauna at the Hyper Humus Marsh and Wildlife Area, a hidden treasure on the outskirts of Newton. Created in the 1900s by a peat and humus mining operation belonging to the Hyper Humus Co., this 1,000-acre section of the Paulinskill Wildlife Management Area contains several cattail marshes and large ponds, and is an excellent habitat for a wide variety of waterfowl, wading birds, raptors and songbirds. It's little wonder this area has been described as a "Noah's Ark" of wildlife. This is an easy 3-mile hike on an earthen path. Bring sun hat and sun screen--and a pair of binoculars, if you're a birder. A picnic will be provided at Memory Park in Newton (opposite the town pool). 20 6 000000.0 0 .0002E7 20 5/20/17 10:00 AM
