An Evening with Beethoven at the Sattins' An evening listening to and talking about the music, not the life, of Beethoven. We'll listen to recordings of Beethoven's music in different genres--the symphony, concerto, string quartet, piano sonata, perhaps his opera Fidelio, and the mass. We'll have a conversation about the music, what it means today, if anything, and about his increasing withdrawal into music that can only be described as mystical. Musical samples will be selected from the early, middle and late periods of his development.

Wine, cheese and crackers, coffee, tea, and dessert will be served.

Seminar/Discussion on Topics Relating to Ancient Greece Three ancient ones--two Spartans and one Wantaginean--will each host one of three seminars on topics related to Ancient Greece. Coffee and refreshments will be served. At the Fellowship in January and February 2020.

1. On January 4, Brian Δoherty will lead a discussion of the early Greek notions of drama, especially its purposes and techniques. We shall watch the gradual disintegration of the world as experienced by Oedipus (a self-centered and blustery king) and the various members of his family.

2. On January 18, Richard Γoffman will lead a discussion of the Trojan War, its mythical antecedents and its long-lasting influence on the arts.

3. On February 1, Jerry Σattin will lead a discussion of some of the ideas in the philosophy of Plato. We will read excerpts from The Republic (the allegory of the cave) and other works.

Minimum bid includes all three seminars.

Review and Discussion of The Dead Sea Gospel by James Boswell The Dead Sea Gospel (2018), by James Boswell, will be the focus of a discussion to be held at the UUFSC on Sunday, September 29, at 1:30 pm. One could be tempted to make the case that the novel is a poorly written and superficial rehash of the groundwork that several authors have visited previously in responsible and interesting fashion, for example, Bart Ehrman. We will choose to ignore that temptation and bring in well-established and responsible commentary to supplement our morning’s discussion. Please be aware that this novel, recently published, was not the work of Samuel Johnson's amanuensis in the 1700s. 25 21 000000.0 0 .0002E7 20 9/29/19 1:30 PM
