4 ½” tall by 6” diameter Black-on-Black Navajo Pot with Water Serpent Design By Than Tsideh (Sunbird) Donated by Judy and John Armstrong Minimum bid: $150. Value upwards of $350. Erik Fender (Than Tsideh or Sunbird) is a highly skilled and creative potter from San Ildefonso Pueblo. His work has been influenced by his mother, Martha Appleleaf, and his grandmother, legendary potter Carmelita Dunlap. San Ildefonso is the pueblo famous for the contemporary revival of the black-on-black style of pottery to recreate the look of pottery shards found on the pueblo. About 1919 Maria Martinez and her husband Julian were responsible for developing the techniques required to create that style of pottery. They came up with the technique of applying a clay slip to a stone-polished red pot and then firing the vessel in a reducing atmosphere by smothering the fire with powdered horse manure and ashes. The result was a matte black design on a highly polished black pot. Some of the most collectible potters include Maria and Julian Martinez, Santana and Adam Martinez, Rose Gonzales, Blue Corn, Carmelita Dunlap, Dora Tse Pe, Tony Da, Barbara Gonzales, Russell Sanchez, Martha Appleleaf, and Erik Fender. Provenance: This pot was acquired directly from the potter at the San Ildefonso Pueblo as an example of a potential gift to be given to members of the Westinghouse/CBS boards of directors in 1995 at a joint board meeting of the two companies following the acquisition of CBS by Westinghouse for $5.4 billion. I came into possession of the pot because I ran the event and ended up having one extra pot. (I kept the best pot for myself.) Original cost of the pot was $325, but today pots this size by Than Tsideh are selling at much higher prices. This will be a multi-meeting facilitated discussion with video footage concerning the fallout from the 9/11 disaster. September 11, 2001 is, much like Pearl Harbor, a day which will live in infamy for most Americans. Pearl Harbor caused the United States to enter into an existing horrific world war which lasted four years. 9/11, on the other hand, allowed the U.S. to enter into what has been termed ‘an endless war’ against a strategy – terrorism – which we have been steadily losing at a terrible cost in lives and resources to the nation and to the world. The discussions will focus on the failure of the U.S. government to engage in a real criminal investigation as to the causes, the failures of response, and the epic first in history collapse of steel framed high-rises due to fire. We will take a hard look at the science as it relates to the activities surrounding the 9/11 attacks. Included in the discussion will be an examination of the many eye-witness accounts which were ignored by government officials and by the 9/11 Commission. In addition, we will look at the events post-9/11 from the perspective of how 9/11 enabled our government to, in the name of security, clamp down on many of our precious Constitutional freedoms supposedly guaranteed by the Bill of Rights. We encourage both skeptics of a conspiracy and those skeptical of the official version of the events to participate. A lively discussion should ensue. Light refreshments will be served.
