Brian Kerkvliet has been working with glass since 1977 and has an extensive list of awards. This bowl is an example of Zanfrico caneworking, one of his favorite techniques and very time consuming. First canes (long rods of glass) are created in a variety of colors, these are fused with other colors, stretched and/or twisted to create new canes of multiple colors and patterns. Sometimes the canes, when sliced into rounds, reveal a picture such as a face or a flower. By laying many of these slices side by side a repeating pattern or mosaic is created. These are then fused and the piece is blown into a vessel of some sort. Brian is also known locally for his work in permaculture and the many classes and events held at Inspiration Farm. An example route would start at Elizabeth Park, go through Maritime Heritage park, follow South Bay Trail to Fairhaven park, where we lunch, play, and then we re-trace our path.
