Sunday Afternoon and Evening Opera Double-Header
Invalid Image LinkInvalid Image Link
Sunday Afternoon and Evening Opera Double-Header

This will be a bit different from last year’s Sunday Night at the Opera. For those who haven’t seen it (or want to see it again) we will show Bizet’s Carmen in the afternoon with drinks and snacks served. This 1984 production staring Placido Domingo and Julia Migenes Johnson is my favorite. We’ll have dinner next: a delicious assortment of dishes and desserts inspired by the second half of the double-header: Carmen Jones. This 1954 film, an Otto Preminger production, stars Harry Belafonte and Dorothy Dandridge. Oscar Hammerstein II updated the book and lyrics to reflect the Second World War setting. Although this was not the first Hollywood film to feature an all-black cast, it was considered risky and daring. Come to the entire event: Bizet’s Carmen, dinner, and Carmen Jones or just dinner and Carmen Jones. Or just dinner. Or whatever you like. Feel free to mix and match.
Date: Sunday, April 8, 2018
Maximum number of people: 10
Minimum bid: $35

From City Center – City Center’s Encores brings back worthwhile theater productions. Some are real gems, mostly from the 30’s, 40’s 50’s, and 60’s. All of them are worth the all too very short one week revival.

Me and My Girl represents a first for Encores!: a musical that was originally written and produced in London’s West End.
The toast of the 1937 London season, Me and My Girl is a delightfully old-fashioned musical about a Cockney everyman who wreaks havoc on high society after being unexpectedly elevated to the lofty position of Earl of Hereford.

From City Center – “Hey, Look Me Over! has been brewing in the minds of the Encores! team for several years now—but what was the point of a special show without a special occasion? As we narrow each season down to a mere three selections we always end up thinking, “But what about Mack & Mabel? What about Milk and Honey? What about George M? What about High Spirits?” As we reach the age of 25, it seems like a good time to let some of our secret pleasures and most favorite ideas that have not yet found a berth on the Encores! stage make guest appearances.”

"Outstanding in the Field"
Invalid Image LinkSold

A couple of years ago, Maria and Jon traveled to the East End for a spectacular al fresco dinner held by “Outstanding in the Field”, with nearly a hundred diners seated at one long formally-set table in the fields of a local farm. Folks brought their own dinner plates to create a stunning vision of community on the white tablecloth, stretching as far as the eye could see! The food and drink were fresh, seasonal, and local, and we stumbled away after sunset sated with the delicious multi-course meal and drunk with the beauty of the summer evening. (The cost, however, meant that it would probably be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for us!) We will recreate this special event for you right here in our own backyard (and for a far more reasonable price!), including the traditional cocktail tour of the garden (should take all of three minutes). All recipes will come from the "Outstanding in the Field" cookbook and our meal will be vegetarian-friendly. We promise you won’t be disappointed! 12 0 000025.0 25 .00025E7 25 9/8/18 6:00 PM

When was the last time you attended one of these? (The inspiration for this came the night our neighbor Carol Dewey showed up on our doorstep at 10pm in pajamas and a robe to just hang out.) So, put on your comfiest PJs and fluffy slippers and join us for fun food (and Pussycat cocktails, since we’re no longer in junior high), a little pampering (Mario Badescu facial, anyone?), and a real chick flick. Catch Dance Fever at the Ballroom of Huntington
Invalid Image LinkInvalid Image Link
Please join us at the Ballroom of Huntington for an evening of social dancing, with lessons for two ballroom dances – Nightclub Two step and another dance of group choice (e.g. Foxtrot, Waltz, Merengue, Cha-Cha, Swing, Salsa, Rumba and Hustle).

Our instructor will be Charlie Wood, known professionally and well regarded by UUFH members Andy Feigin, Jan Brenner and Bill Houck. Charlie has an excellent reputation in western Suffolk area dance circles, and his lessons are a lot of fun. As you learn your new steps you’ll practice them by rotating partners. This is a great way to break the ice, meet new people and try something new.

The lessons will take approximately 45 minutes to one hour, followed by a social hour where you can try out what you’ve learned or just relax and socialize. Charlie will usually lead participants in a line dance – challenging, but fun.

Light refreshments will be served: soft drinks, snacks, wine and cheese.

We hope to see you there. Ages 13 and up.

Location: Ballroom of Huntington, 508 New York Avenue (east side) between Fairmount and Oakland Streets (one block down from Aboff's
