Transcendentalism was a significant movement in our Unitarian Universalist past. Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau are perhaps the best known of the Transendentalists. Nature was of central importance to them. As UU author Barry Andrews says, “In nature, the Transcendentalists saw the presence of the divine. . . . For the Transcendentalists, the appreciation of nature meant being in and being with nature. As a spiritual practice, this relationship, this interactivity between human beings and nature may take many forms . . . . It may mean spending time in natural environments, outside of and separate from our life at work . . . In his essay ‘Walking,’ Thoreau suggests the purpose of time spent walking in nature as this: “I am alarmed when it happens that I have walked a mile into the woods bodily, without getting there in spirit.’” Guided by Rev. Jane Thickstun, we’ll take a hike that honors this perspective. We’ll make sure we “get there in spirit” and seek the divine in nature through the words and mindset of our forebears. | Join Andrew Quagliata (and possibly Susanne and the kids) for a boat ride on Cayuga Lake. Our 24-foot pontoon boat provides a comfortable way to see our community from a different perspective. We will depart from Meyers Park in Lansing and take a one to two hour boat ride. The winner of this action can choose whether we head south toward Ithaca to see views of Cornell University and Ithaca College or whether we head north toward Taughannock Falls State Park. If the weather is nice and the water is warm, we can even shut off the engine, jump in the water, and go for a swim. Children under the age of 12 must wear a personal flotation device at all times.
